Visit of the Château de la Moutte and its park

From 1er june to 31 october 2022

Jean-Louis Chaix

From June 1st to October 31st, the City of Saint-Tropez is opening the Château de la Moutte-Domaine Emile-Ollivier, a romantic jewel with a magnificent palm grove and the extraordinary library of Emile Ollivier, man of letters and former President of the Council under Napoleon III.
The Château de la Moutte - Domaine Emile Ollivier is owned by the Conservatoire du Littoral, which has entrusted its management to the town of Saint-Tropez. It is a remarkable site, listed as a Historical Monument.

In 1860, the property was bought by Emile Ollivier, a writer and member of the French Academy and head of government under Napoleon III in 1870, who turned it into a true romantic jewel. With his father, Démosthène, and his second wife, Marie-Thérèse, Emile Ollivier created the original garden and the luxuriant palm grove in the château's park, composed of plants and trees of many different origins (Middle Eastern palms, Australian eucalyptus, Mediterranean arbutus trees, etc.). The layout of the park and the arrangement of the plants were organised in such a way as to create remarkable spaces: a palm grove, an avenue of palms, vines and bald cypresses planted to shade part of the site.

The château itself, with its ochre facades and finely chiselled towers, houses an extraordinary library of 4,500 books, a showcase of the cultural history of the Second Empire and more widely of the 19th century. Some of the books still bear the dedications of Emile Zola, Hector Berlioz, Alfred de Vigny, Frédéric Mistral or Ivan Tourgueniev... You can discover it during the guided tours of the castle where Franz Liszt, Marie Bonaparte, Erroll Flynn or Simone Signoret stayed.
