Conference - BERTHE WEIL GALERISTE D'AVANT -GARDE

The 18/11/2025

Lecture presented by Sophie Eloy, collection attaché, in charge of contemporary counterpoints at the Musée de l'Orangerie.
In 1901, Berthe Weill opened her gallery in the Pigalle district, at 25 rue Victor-Massé. She chose to get involved with a number of very different artists whom she promoted, often contributing to their revelation and career development despite her limited means.

Among them were some of the greatest names of the avant-garde (Picasso, Matisse, Modigliani, Valadon...), as well as others less prominent today. With unfailing enthusiasm, she was their spokeswoman and supported them for almost forty years. As early as 1933, she published Pan! Dans l'œil..., her memoirs of three decades of activity. However, Berthe Weill's career is not yet enshrined in the firmament of art dealers who include Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, Paul and Léonce Rosenberg, Ambroise Vollard and Paul Guillaume.
