Description of the city’s museums:
Musée de l’Annonciade: The “most beautiful of France’s small museums” presents a panorama of famous paintings illustrating artistic movements centered on Neo-Impressionism, the Nabis, the Fauves, and independent artists. Numerous depictions of Saint-Tropez by renowned artists who followed in Signac’s footsteps from 1892 through the 1930s and 1940s. A collection of major sculptures in the figurative tradition (Maillol, Despiau, Wlérick) and ceramics. The museum itself is a perfect example of modernist renovation in a former chapel, which was fully converted into a museum in the 1950s and whose entire interior architecture and furnishings (ironwork, lighting, seating, and furniture) are protected as a “Historic Monument.”
Maison des Papillons–Dany-Lartigue Museum: A veritable “Sistine Chapel of Lepidoptera,” the Maison des Papillons features an astonishing collection of butterflies and insects gathered over several decades by Dany Lartigue, a painter and passionate entomologist. The highlight: the butterflies are displayed in their natural settings, painted by Dany Lartigue.
Maritime History Museum – The Citadel: Located in the citadel’s keep, the Saint-Tropez Maritime History Museum explores the maritime heritage shaped by local figures from various eras—sailors, explorers, fishermen, and boat builders… One year after its opening in July 2013, it was already ranked first among the Var’s paid-admission museums. Today, it is the second-most-visited museum in the Var in terms of paid admissions.
Saint-Tropez Gendarmerie and Cinema Museum: Inaugurated in late June 2016, the museum, housed in the famous Saint-Tropez Gendarmerie, surpassed one million visitors in March 2024, making it the most-visited museum in the Var department. Through permanent and temporary exhibitions, as well as tributes to locally filmed movies that have left a lasting impression on the people of Saint-Tropez and the world of cinema, the museum highlights the love affair between Saint-Tropez and the movies. Not to be missed: the exhibition, open since April 13, celebrating 60 years of *Le Gendarme* and the first Mustang in France.
