Performance: “Behind the Scenes”

As part of the 2026 Var Readers’ Choice Awards, the theater company Cie l’Etreinte is adapting the story “L’envers de nos décors”—a finalist in the comic book category—into a stage production.

Victor Lassus and Matisse Truc take the stage armed with nothing but comic books and their creativity. They glide from one character to another—from student to teacher—and bring to life what unfolds behind the words, amid the silences and misunderstandings. Blending poetry, humor, and clown-like theater, the two actors draw us into a story where childhood and adulthood echo one another, where people seek to understand one another, to express themselves… and sometimes simply to reconnect.

The Var Department organizes the Var Readers’ Choice Award as part of the Var Book Festival. A shortlist of nine works is pre-selected across three categories: adult novels, children’s picture books, and comic books. This selection is put to a public vote online at www.var.fr or via a ballot submitted to the BMJ.

The Readers’ Prize is always accompanied by the “Le Var, Lire en Territoire” program, where theater companies and artists present performances and visual arts workshops related to the nominated works.

This year, the BMJ will host Cie l’Etreinte for its performance inspired by the nominated graphic novel *L’envers de nos décors*:
Founded in 2007 in Toulon by actors from the Conservatory eager to create locally, It has made a name for itself with demanding stagings of powerful texts, firmly establishing itself in the cultural landscape. In 2024, it became a collective and embraced a new artistic direction focused on writing accessible to all. A major partnership with the “Le Var Lire en Territoire” initiative has given rise to productions that are understated, burlesque, and closely connected to the audience.
