A retrospective of the exhibition running from March 10 to July 19, 2026, presented by Géraldine BRETAULT, art historian and graduate of the Ecole du Louvre.
Matisse 1941-1954
The Grand Palais exhibition focuses on Henri Matisse's last creative years, a period often perceived as a culmination, but above all marked by profound reinvention. Between 1941 and 1954, despite illness and age, the artist developed a new plastic language based on pure color and cut-out form. Through more than 230 works - paintings, drawings, cut-out gouaches, illustrated books, textiles and stained glass - the exhibition places this invention in its artistic, personal and historical context. It shows how cut-out gouache became an autonomous medium for Matisse, capable of adapting to both the intimacy of paper and monumental commissions.
We can admire the continuity of his painting, always central to his approach, and discover major ensembles such as Jazz, the Intérieurs de Vence, the Nus bleus and the projects for the Chapelle de Vence. Conceived as a journey through the artist's studio, the exhibition invites us to a slow and sensitive discovery of a late work of radical modernity.
